From the 18th hole to the clubhouse participants in the annual Golf Against Cancer fundraiser were taking strides to help fight cancer.
The event was held at the Deerfield Golf Course on Saturday, July 21st.
Steve Popovich, who founded the event, says he started it after several his family members suffered from the deadly disease. He says it’s important to not only raise money, but also awareness about cancer.
“My family has a long history of cancer,” said Popovich, going back to my grandparents, on both sides, and 12 years ago my daughter was diagnosed to have a brain tumor. Having a child diagnosed with cancer was what got me focused on fighting cancer.”
Popovich said all of the money at the event stays in the North Tonawanda community.
“The money we raise goes to fighting cancer,” he said, “and it stays local, which is very important to me.”
Last year organizers says they raised more than $4,500 and this year they are hoping the number will be even higher.
