North Tonawanda City Hall

By: Staff Reports

Just days ago, the City of North Tonawanda confirmed that Downtown construction would proceed as scheduled despite the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the country. In part, the press release stated:

The construction schedule for this project is March 25th – July 17th. During the construction period traffic patterns will be altered in downtown as follows: Main Street will be one-way to the north, Webster Street will be one-way to the south, Goundry Street will be one-way to the west, and Tremont Street will be one-way to the east. Periodic sidewalk closures will also occur to accommodate construction.

However, this did not last long as a new executive order by Governor Cuomo ceased all non-essential construction. The City of North Tonawanda stated on Tuesday, March 31st, 2020, that the project would not move forward as anticipated. Specifically, the City released a statement saying, “the downtown construction area at Webster and Main Streets has had to be postponed due to the Governor’s orders.  As soon as it is deemed safe the construction will cease and traffic will be routed as normal.”

There is no timetable for when construction will begin again or how this will impact anticipated project completion dates.
