Niagara County Surrogate and Acting Supreme Court Justice Sara Sheldon will appear for a dinner and discussion on the topic of Veterans Court. She will appear at The Como Restaurant in Niagara Falls on May 12, and at Danny Sheehan’s Steakhouse in Lockport on May 20.
Sponsored by the Niagara Law Center, a collaboration between Niagara University and the Bar Association of Niagara County, the dinner event is not only for attorneys, but also for veterans services workers, advocates, veterans and all those interested in the topic.
The dinner discussion is scheduled from 6-7:30 pm; the cost is $45, which includes a full-course dinner.
Veterans Court is a treatment court not unlike drug court and mental health court, with the addition of exposing the defendants to help from mentors, who are ex-service members.
Defendants who complete treatment for substance abuse and service-related psychological problems are allowed to erase felony convictions in exchange for a non-jail sentence.
Those who fail may face state prison time.
"Learn how and when veterans are eligible to participate in this specialized legal system, and how best you can serve your clients when practicing in Veterans Court," the Niagara Law Center informs the Reporter.
Those who attend will receive 1.0 credit from Niagara University.
