The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has sparked outrage across the United States. Protests have taken place in major cities across the country including New York City, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Louisville, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, Washington D.C., and etc.
There have also been events held closer to home in Buffalo and Rochester. Niagara Falls residents joined that cause on Sunday, May 31st, 2020, and held a demonstration to protest police brutality in the wake of Floyd’s death.
The group met at the old police station on Hyde Park Boulevard and then marched more than a mile to the new police headquarters on Main Street. Estimates put the total number of demonstrators around 150.
The protest remained peaceful and was heralded by public officials as a model for the nation. As it turns out, the nation was indeed watching as more than 600,000 people tuned in to the Niagara Reporter’s live feed of the demonstration. In total, the live feed reached more than 1.2 million people.
Niagara Falls should be proud that their peaceful protest has become an example for the nation.
