Niagara Falls residents were left worried and confused Tuesday evening after a message from the Human Right’s Commission was posted to Facebook. In pertinent part, the message read to, “not attend June 5th Protest March in Niagara Falls.”

Within fifteen minutes of the post being made, however, it was quickly taken down. An unnamed member on the committee told this newspaper that the statement was the result of two members “going rogue” and that the statement did not represent the position of the committee. Additionally, that there were no facts to support the claims of ill-intentioned groups seeking to take part.

Upon being reached for comment, Committee Chair Amber Hill told the Niagara Reporter that “people are encouraged to exercise their First Amendment right to protest and we hope that they do so in a safe, peaceful, and productive way.”

As of today, there is still a demonstration scheduled for Friday, June 5th, 2020, starting at 6:00pm. The event, according to organizers, is meant to be peaceful and give residents of Niagara Falls a meaningful opportunity to raise issues relating to police brutality.

Although there was a rally in Niagara Falls held on Sunday, May 31st, 2020, it was put together last minute and many members of the community were not able to take part in it for that reason. Friday’s event gives individuals the opportunity to be heard.

The Niagara Reporter will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
