NEW YORK, NY – Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon was endorsed today by Make the Road Action (MRA), citing their shared commitment to improving legal services for immigrants, education reform, and progressive policy initiatives that protect Latino and immigrant communities and their families.

“For years, Make the Road New York has mobilized communities from across the state to stand up to Governor Cuomo’s destructive policies which put our values at odds with the needs of New York’s communities of color,” said Cynthia Nixon. “I am proud to receive their endorsement and look forward to fighting alongside working class New Yorkers to demand a fair New York for everyone.”

As governor, Cynthia would fight against the devastating inequality in communities of color across New York by supporting policies like the DREAM Act and the drivers licenses bill. By contrast, Governor Cuomo has created backroom deals that leave thousands of black and brown immigrants in New York in fear of Donald Trump’s rogue ICE agents.

Javier H. Valdés, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road Action, said: “As Trump continues his assault on immigrants and people of color, New York needs bold progressive leadership that will make our state a true beacon of resistance. Cynthia Nixon has stood with our members in the streets for many years to fight for the truly equitable schools we deserve. Now, in her candidacy, Cynthia Nixon has committed to a strong progressive platform rooted in the lived experience of working-class New Yorkers of color and immigrants. She has committed to passing and fully resourcing a full range of policies and protections that our communities urgently need. A few critical ones include passing the Dream Act and driver’s licenses for all, strengthening the rent laws and standing up to the real estate tycoons who pad the pockets of Albany politicians to pad their own bottom lines, and implementing real criminal justice reform that includes full bail reform. The time has come to make them a reality.”

Make the Road Action (MRA), is a grassroots advocacy organization that builds political power rooted in helping immigrant and working-class communities across the state. MRA has over 22,000-members, and has cemented themselves as a strong progressive leader on the local and state level. Make the Road Action promotes progressive policy solutions and strengthens the movement for justice through electoral and grassroots organizing.
