When Will the Celebrations Resume?
The global economy has taken a shellacking in recent months, but the full extent of the damage is far from done. Subdued celebrations on Independence Day are testament to the effects of the New World order as it impacts countless millions of people from all walks of life. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly share the same fate – and it is up to us to make lemonade with the lemons we’ve been given. Fortunately, all is not lost as every cloud has a silver lining. The indomitable human spirit remains defiant in the face of adversity. We will
NXIVM ‘Cult’ named as part of the reason Dalai Lama suspends secretary Lama Tenzin Dhonden
The Dalai Lama’s secretary, Lama Tenzin Dhonden, has been suspended. High ranking members of The Dalai Lama’s Tibetan government in exile say that Lama Tenzin faced an internal investigation after accusations surfaced about an alleged extortion of a businessman in connection to an appearance of The Dalai Lama in California. Lama Tenzin might have escaped censure for that episode, since there were two sides to that story. See Sara Bronfman’s Lover, Lama Tenzin, suspended by Dalai Lama over corruption claims What is looming larger is Lama Tenzin’s ties to NXIVM. It was through Lama Tenzin that the Dalai Lama came to Albany

Letter to the Editor
30 October 2017 Dear Editor, As this election comes to a close, I am writing to thank all the people who I have spoken to in my door-to-door campaign throughout the Town of Lewiston. I’ve seen many good things and some bad things. The bad things first. Too many households contain no voters. Unless you have the registration list, you would never know. I have walked streets where every third house contains no voters. I think this is terrible but honestly, I don’t know what could or should be done. Almost as bad are the voters who are registered but

County Legislature Will Likely Remain in GOP Hands While Some Contests Promise Closeness, Experts See ‘Status Quo’ Election
Tuesday’s countywide election is likely to produce the same 11-4 split, with the same faces, on the Niagara County Legislature. How likely is that outcome? When we were asking Niagara County Public Information Officer Christian Peck about polling sites last week and asked him to handicap the races for county legislature, he joked, “I’m not expecting to have to upgrade any of the photos on the county webpage in January.” Peck, who is not a political handicapper, does have a knack for repeating conventional wisdom, and in this case, the outcome of Tuesday’s races seems likely to

“I don’t make jokes,” Will Rogers wrote, “I just watch the government and report the facts.” I’ve written often about the lack of transparency, ethical accountability and fiscal due diligence in Lewiston, and although some wish to believe the present majority is shining examples of open, ethical and fiscal frugality, the facts, as John Adams notes, are stubborn things. It doesn’t take a Wharton Business graduate to understand why Lewiston taxpayers are paying a town tax. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to assemble the facts as to why. For 10 years Lewiston has been governed by a majority

Guest Commentary on the New York State Constitutional Convention Call
Chances are good that the folks reading this have already heard that on the back of the November 7 ballot they will be asked whether to call a citizens’ convention to re-work our state’s foundational governing document. The other half of the electorate, regrettably, still knows nothing about this crucial decision. At this late date, proponents still find themselves needing to dispel lingering misconceptions proffered by groups and interests dreading a change in their status quo. In response to some very legitimate concerns, and contrary to a bit of fearmongering: A state constitutional convention must set its own

100 YEARS OF WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE. GO CYNDY AND CELIA!
Fellow Islanders, The year 2017 marks the 100-year anniversary of women in New York State gaining the right to vote. When you vote on November 7, you will get a sticker with a logo created to commemorate the occasion. I’m sure you’ve noticed that three of the Town Council candidates are women. For the first time ever, we may have a majority of women on the Town Board. All of the candidates running for office are fine people. But two of the candidates are particularly qualified, and they just happen to be women: Cyndy Montana and Dr. Celia Spacone. Cyndy

Be Grand
Dear Islanders, The two Town Councilmen who are leaving office, Ray Billica and Chris Aronica, wrote a letter last week. Their message, essentially, was that we need to elect Town Council Candidates who will do the will of the people rather than the will of a select few. And thus, their inference was that Supervisor McMurray is not listening to the people, but doing the bidding of a select few. But what does the record say? After 18 months in office serving with both of the gentlemen who wrote this letter, I can say that I know one of them

Cardiac-Stroke Care unit construction enters final stages at Memorial Medical Center
Construction at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center’s new $4.3 million Cardiac/Stroke Care Unit is entering its final stages and members of the nursing staff are getting excited about the prospect of caring for their patients in the new 12,950-square-foot facility. This week they stopped in to check on the progress being made by general contractor Telco Construction, shown here putting some finishing touches on one of the new private patient rooms. Along with all private rooms, the new unit will feature six higher acuity step-down rooms and an in-unit rehabilitation therapy facility to encourage quicker patient recovery.
