Caters to parents and teachers searching for unique educational experiences for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Aquarium of Niagara has revamped its educational programming to offer brand new, interactive classes for kids that can be done from the comfort of their own homes.
There are four different categories of programming:
- Animal Painting Enrichment Sessions – Did you know our penguins and sea lions can paint? Our penguins use their feet to waddle through the paint and onto canvases, and our sea lions can actually hold the paintbrush with their mouths! The experience brings variety to the animals’ days and allows them to interact with different materials while practicing natural behaviors. These sessions are fun for all ages.
- Animal Tales – Virtual story time for kids ages 2-7. Participants will hear a story about an aquatic animal, then virtually meet that animal in real time! Some of the animals include: turtles, marine invertebrates and crabs. Parents and other family members are encouraged to participate with their children as they read along with the educator and everyone is encouraged to ask questions and participate in the lesson.
- Jr. Vet – Calling all would-be animal keepers! The Jr. Vet series focuses on some of our most popular marine animals. Participants learn what goes into caring for animals like the Aquarium’s marine mammals, penguins, and sharks. The classes are for children ages 8-12 and are interactive. They even include a live interview with our keepers and/or veterinarians.
- CSI: Crime SEA Investigation – This three-day interactive class explores an animal keeper’s worst nightmare — an animal has escaped! Participants will watch virtual “interrogation” videos with Aquarium staff and use their problem solving skills to figure out whodunnit. This course is for children ages 8-12.
The new programming uses several different digital platforms to connect the educator with participants.
“In this new, COVID-19 era, families and teachers are looking for ways to engage with local cultural and educational institutions in new and different ways, and now they can meet some our animals from the comfort of their own home,” said Executive Director Gary Siddall. “Our new virtual programs are carefully crafted by our educators to ensure kids are learning while also having fun.”
