WBEN radio personality Tom Bauerle says he has evidence to back up his allegations that people-most likely operatives working on behalf of Gov. Andrew Cuomo have launched a campaign to discredit him for his vehement on-the-air criticism of Cuomo’s New York gun control SAFE Act.
“I’m not prepared yet to go into particulars, but there are people in this state who want me off the air. There are people in this state who consider me a threat to the Cuomo administration,” he told his listeners during a broadcast on Dec.30. That was about a week before an incident last Wednesday in which he called police to his home.
“There are people in this state who are appalled that I am very, very much pro-Constitution and very much pro-Second Amendment.”
Bauerle has been an outspoken critic of gun control in general and the New York SAFE law, which Cuomo has boasted is the “toughest” gun control law in the United States.
Arguably the best known broadcaster in Western New York, Bauerle is a libertarian firebrand whose views on a range of issues-- from gun control (anti) to animal rights (very much pro)-- reflect an eclectic mind and articulate tongue made for radio.
According to unnamed sources cited in a Sunday Buffalo News article, Bauerle called police to his Williamsville residence at around 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, saying that one or more suspects were on his property. When officers arrived, they found the talk show host patrolling his yard with a licensed handgun.
Cops said they found no evidence to back up his claims and relieved him of the handgun. He later underwent a psychiatric evaluation, the sources said. No charges were filed.
Bauerle took a couple days off work before coming back on Friday.
“Andrew Cuomo is a mentally ill, vindictive little man, and he employs cowards,” Bauerle told his listeners during his broadcast of Dec. 30. “This has been going on for several months.”
Bauerle said that a state-of-the-art video surveillance system deployed on his grounds, along with security experts with experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, have uncovered evidence to back up his claims, evidence which is now in the hands of his attorney.
“I have become a giant boil on the ass of Andrew Cuomo. And I do not put anything past Andrew Cuomo or his political operatives. They will do anything, they will destroy people, in order to win re-election in 2014,” Bauerle said. “I know where they hide, I have it on tape.”
Bauerle admitted his story is a strange one.
“Somebody has a hell of a lot of money invested in watching every move I make. If you were telling me this story, I’d say you were nuts. I’d say show me the proof. I don’t even have a traffic ticket, much less an arrest, a conviction or anything else, so I don’t know what they’re trying to find.”
At the end of the day Bauerle’s statement was classic Bauerle, defiant and bold in the face of what some might think are overwhelming odds.
“I will not be intimidated, I will not be silenced, I will be heard,” he said.
