North Tonawanda City Hall

By: Arthur Pappas

Mayor of North Tonawanda

As of May15th the NYS Governor has extended the PAUSE order for the WNY region until May 28th with his emergency declaration to June 13th.  Our county continues to see a rise in the COVID 19 cases with 796 cases, 80 being in NT and 50 deaths.  Therefore, residents still need to shelter in place and practice health protocol.

Reopening of businesses and other venues will remain a slow process.   Until the hospitalization rate and death rate decline, we are unable to enter Phase I which will include no more than groups of 10 with social distancing.  Low risk businesses and activities may resume first.  Construction, manufacturing, wholesale suppliers, and retail with delivery or curbside pickup will be the first to open when we enter Phase I.  Landscaping and gardening as well as the Drive in with restrictions and tennis courts are allowed to open now despite the extended Pause Order.

North Tonawanda Mayor Art Pappas declared a State of Emergency on Tuesday, March 17th, 2020.

The meeting of the newly formed CET (City Emergent Team) group with representatives from education, business, religion, economic development. parks and recreation, the trades, arts and entertainment, health and welfare, employees, law and the Chamber of Commerce all voiced concerns and suggestions for the reopening when the City is allowed by the Regional Control Group set up by Governor Cuomo.  It was an enthusiastic meeting and very productive.  The committee will continue to meet regularly.

For now, we must remain vigilant and patient a while longer.  I as well as you, are anxious to get out and about with friends, family and the residents of NT but to ensure the safety of us all we must continue to abide by the rules with the hope that we will benefit from our restraints.  Please try to enjoy the warmer weather keeping safe and healthy with loved ones.
