Musician With Down Syndrome to Perform, Inspire at Jewish Community Center

On January 11, 2015 from 2-4pm “Hand in Hand with Yad B'Yad: A Musical Performance by Sujeet” will take place at the Maxine & Robert Seller Theatre in the Jewish Community Center, 2640 North Forest Road, Getzville, NY 14068).

Sujeet Desai is a 33 year old musician with Down syndrome who has recently moved to Williamsville, NY. Sujeet plays seven instruments, including the Bb and bass clarinet, saxophone, violin, trumpet, piano and drums. A graduate of the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in Massachusetts, Sujeet travels worldwide to do inspirational solo musical performances and self-advocacy workshops. Since March of 2000 he has performed in over 40 states and 13 countries.

He is the recipient of 16 international and numerous national awards for his music and self-advocacy, one of which is the President’s award received in Singapore in 2000.

Sujeet has had two documentaries created on his life, was featured in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and has appeared on national TV shows including The View, 20/20, and Oprah Winfrey. In his spare time, Sujeet is also an accomplished athlete having achieved 3rd level 2nd Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is a winner of gold and silver medals in the World Games ’99 Special Olympics in swimming, and numerous medals in alpine skiing, cross country running, and bowling.

This concert is part of the JCC Concert Series, in cooperation with Yad B'Yad. There is a suggested donation of $18.00 at the door, with proceedings benefiting Yad B’Yad. Students are free. Please join us for a light kosher reception following the performance.
