The race for Lewiston Town Clerk has became more interesting last week when the Town of Lewiston Republican Committee endorsed Regina Scibilia Cecconi over the incumbent Republican town clerk Donna R. Garfinkel.
Garfinkel will primary Cecconi and it will be up to Republican primary voters to decide who will represent them on the Republican line.
If Cecconi wins, however, she apparently will have to face Garfinkel in the general election.
In a surprise move, the Democratic Party in Lewiston, headed by its chairwoman attorney Diane Roberts, endorsed Garfinkel, who is a Republican.
Niagara County Democratic Chairman Nick Forster said he will sign the paperwork necessary for Garfinkel to run on the Democratic line.
What, perhaps, is less surprising was Cecconi's endorsement by Republicans since she is the girlfriend of the Village of Lewiston Republican Chairman Rob Nichols.
Nichols is also employed part time in the office of Assemblyman John Ceretto.
Garfinkel was appointed last year by the town board after longtime clerk Carol Brandon retired in December. The position pays $47,000.
Because Brandon resigned before completing her full term, this is a special election for the remaining year of Brandon's original term. There will be another election in 2015 for the full four year term.
Garfinkel was a long time assistant to Brandon.
Cecconi, a mother to two, is a certified Human Resource professional, a graduate of Niagara University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, and completed her Masters Certificate in Human Resource Management through Villanova University.
She's proposing an extension of office hours on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Garfinkel, a registered municipal clerk, spent 23 years as deputy town clerk under Brandon and Lilly Taddeo.
