Estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau last week indicate that, between July, 2012 and July, 2013, the population of Erie and Niagara Counties fell to 50th place on the list of metropolitan areas with more than one million people, down from 49th a year ago, with an estimated 1,134,115 residents.
It is estimated that Erie County grew by 944 people, while Niagara County dropped by 596 people - most of them fleeing the City of Niagara Falls.
A total of 11,865 babies were born in Erie and Niagara in 2013, while 11,814 persons died, for a net gain of 51. At the same time, 2,499 immigrants moved to the area, offset by an outflow of 1,937 American citizens who left the region, apparently to escape its notoriously high taxes. |
