Cuba Not So Bad, Reader, Frequent Visitor Says
As a frequent visitor to Niagara Falls, N. Y., and former small business owner in town I am still interested in the goings-on in the area. I always read the Reporter and with the last copy, I was very disappointed with the report about Cuba on page 14. Whoever had this totally false information given to you for publication has obviously no idea about the facts in Cuba. I am not Cuban or pro government and have visited Cuba as a tourist only a number of times, along with about one million Canadians every year. I also spoke openly to the locals and can only contradict this report as terrible propaganda.
First, the Cuban government as of lately no longer "controls" employment, there are now many private enterprises, even real estate brokers. The income is not $ 10.00 per month; it has been $20.00 for years. What is more important, Education right up to and including university is free and even more important - also not mentioned - healthcare is free. Rents- if any- are unbelievably cheap. Many statesmen in the world - including Nelson Mandela - have been befriended with Fidel Castro and your photo of Raoul and Fidel Castro marked as "The Faces of evil..." are totally inappropriate.
Oh yes, private gun ownership and a long list of gun fatalities is unknown in Cuba. One of the reasons why I no longer want to spend winters in Florida. One note in the report was partially correct, there is little police to be seen, but in Cuba domestic disagreements are the most frequent criminal offences. And finally, there is freedom of religion - we all remember the Pope's visit to Havana some years ago, but church attendance seems to be very sparse.
Thank you in advance for publishing my rebuttal of your publication's "Cuba not a nation but a prison surrounded by water."

Regarding the Niagara Falls Water Board's rate hike of 2.6 percent:
I am a widow--on a limited income--and decided to keep my house after my husband passed away!!
Water rates in Niagara Falls--every time I get the bill it's higher--and not from usage--am charged the minimum--after all, there is only myself--
Bill for Jan. 2013----$88.05
Bill for April 2013---$91.40
Bill for July 2013---$93.07
These are the minimum charges--when paid before the due date--What's the story??
The "big boys" need a raise?? or is it because the dummies that still own a house in NF--have to make up for the lost revenue--use your imagination re--
